The helicopter is believed to have been monitoring the rally when it crashed just outside of Charlottesville about 5pm yesterday local time (7am today AEST).

The Federal Aviation Agency confirmed a Bell 407 helicopter crashed seven miles southwest of Charlottesville at about 4:50 p.m.

Neighbors who live near Old Farm Road told WVIR the helicopter crashed into the woods.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a helicopter crash in Albemarle County. Two people have been confirmed dead.

No one on the ground was injured, state police said.

A photo on Twitter claimed to be taken at the scene shows a large fire amid the trees. The FAA said it is investigating the crash and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine its probable cause.

ABC15 reporter Kaley Lawrimore writes that fatalities are feared.

One person died earlier Saturday after a crowd plowed into a group of counter demonstrators in downtown Charlottesville.
