But Giroud made his mark on Arsenal's new campaign on Friday as his late header secured a 4-3 win at home to Leicester City, who had led when the forward came off the bench.

Aaron Ramsey equalised in the 83rd minute and two minutes later substitute Giroud rose highest to head home via the woodwork.

While Lacazette netted the opener after two minutes against Leicester on Friday, a collapse left Arsenal trailing with seven minutes remaining.

"Obviously I knew that I was going to have a chance so we tried to push", Giroud said.

"Previously in the Premier League we've not got off to the best of starts, so it meant a lot for us to get a good start and get three points today".

Despite only starting 17 games last season in all competitions, Giroud still scored 16 times - including an eye-catching scorpion-style kick against Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman admitted he was relieved Arsenal managed to avoid an embarrassing opening day defeat.

"Character wise, we have been great tonight".

'If you look across the world of football this is a plum position, people want to be manager of Arsenal.

"We had some avoidable goals which we conceded and overall we have to work on that", he said referring to poor marking in the by his team's defence. You can not keep the strikers happy when they don't play. They all deserve to play.

'I prefer to be on the pitch, ' the 30-year-old admitted in his post-match interview with Sky Sports. He is a fantastic guy who loves the club.

"I must tell you I opened the door for him at some stage (to leave) because it's important for him to play".

More awful defending followed in the second half, and Vardy restored the lead after he was left wide open on a corner, with Petr Cech in no-man's land. "We love him and in the end he chose to stay". "There were hard moments when we were down and we managed to get out of that and it's great to see".
