Football fans react after Manchester United's win over West Ham

United's defense was given an easy ride with Matic stationed in front of them, and Pogba could also thrive this season.

The question now was could United go on and convince they could be prolific goalscorers this season.

The key issue behind that disappointing home record was a lack of goals.

Bilic admits that the opening match could not have gone much worse for West Ham, but has urged his charges to quickly pick themselves up ahead of next week's meeting with Southampton at the London Stadium.

United took control early on and never relinquished their grip, looking a formidable force with new arrivals Lukaku and Nemanja Matic bedding in well. The Belgian finished decisively by thumping in his shot off a post. He could not have asked for a better start. He's going to have that time.

Moments later Paul Pogba fired in the fourth after he was slipped in by Martial to complete the rout to the delight of the home support.

Matic might not be as glamorous a signing as a new centre forward but he is already having a big impact.

"That's the main thing and he (Mourinho) will be happy".

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Daley Blind each blazed over with ambitious efforts and, as the Hammers battled to halt the Red tide, Pedro Obiang, Mark Noble and André Ayew each dug deep to stem the flow with juddering midfield tackles. It was a lightning quick counterattack. The Spain striker's goal was scant consolation, however, as Antonio Conte's side collapsed to a 3-2 loss against Burnley and had Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas sent off. As United camped in West Ham's half, the formation turned into a 4-1-4-1 with Matic anchoring the midfield and the full-backs pushing well up the pitch as well. [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan is not a defender and last season he needed this time. Mkhitaryan was hauled off following a dire display against Manchester City in September and it took months to regain Mourinho's trust.

"He apologised to everyone and we believe he will come back stronger".

Juan Mata and Rashford did well in the wide roles - Rashford especially, who hit the post in the second half - but there is still room for an out-and-out winger.

"It was the first game of the season". In just seven of their 19 league outings here last season they scored two or more.

Mourinho has won the league title in his second season with his last five clubs.

But United's other summer signing played no part in the game.

"Any striker can play phenomenally hard but if he doesn't score goals the pressure is on them, so good for him, good for Wayne Rooney, (Alexandre) Lacazette, Morata - good for all the strikers arriving in new clubs and scoring in the first days".

The match will be played at Old Trafford.
