Eye Injuries Possible After Solar Eclipse

Regular sun glasses, even if they were very dark, were not enough to protect your eyes from damage.

"Usually it takes around 48 hours for your eye to show that you do have some sort of damage", he said.

With the solar eclipse less than 24 hours away, it is important to take proper precautions with eyewear while viewing the eclipse. It is unsafe for anyone to look directly at the sun for any length of time or during an eclipse, as damage can occur within seconds of exposure.

Ophthalmologists expect to see a few patients who might have injured to their eyes by staring at the sun during Monday's solar eclipse.

If you should experience discomfort or vision problems following the eclipse, the association advises making an appointment with an optometrist for a comprehensive eye examination.

Dr. Routhier agrees. "When your eyes are over-stimulated by sunlight, they release a flood of communication chemicals that can damage the retina", she says.

How do you know if you might have damaged your retina/vision? Your eyes' cells can start to lose their function while you sleep, he said. The center of vision is affected the worst, the retina responsible for seeing in high resolution and in color. "For the most part they have damaged photoreceptors that just aren't capable of doing more than just registering maybe the presence of light but can't really build up enough information for them to be able to see clearly".

The American Optometric Association said millions of people from OR to SC are facing the danger of eye damage when the moon covers part of the sun for 2 to 3 hours. Potential signs of damage include sensitivity to light, eye pain and loss of vision in one or both eyes.

"You don't want to go blind - so we made sure we got legit ones", David Smith, a guest at Ghost River Brewing Company, said. However, the other half partially recover or do not recover. Could my eyes still have been damaged?

Lievens said people who damaged their eyes during the eclipse will recognize symptoms within a few days.

If diagnosed promptly, Lievens said doctors can help patients live with blind spots caused by sun exposure.

Could I have damaged my eyes looking through a camera or a telescope? Meanwhile, the next solar eclipse will be in 2024, so better safe than sorry.
