Eight dead, over 40 missing in Himachal landslide

Himachal At least five killed in landslide in Mandi district many more feared dead

As per reports, National Highway 21 from Mandi to Aut has also been closed for traffic due to landslide threats. The National Disaster Response Force has been summoned. Eight bodies have been recovered, including the driver and the conductor of Chamba depot Chanden Sharma and Satpal, respectively. Indian Army personnel and members of the NDRF have been called for fast execution of the rescue operations. "Pained by the loss of lives due to landslide related accidents in HP's Mandi district. My condolences with the families of the deceased", Modi tweeted.

The landslide happened at Kotrupi, 220 kilometres from Shimla.

Shimla, SP, D W Negi said that private bus met with an accident in the jurisdiction of Nerwa Police Station of Shimla district located close to the border of Sirmaur district. It swept away the buses 800 metres down into a gorge and buried one of the buses completely. Himachal Pradesh Transport Minister G S Bali said that they fear around 50 people were washed away, The Times of India reported. Rescue operation has been under way since 2am, he said, adding, one bus was going to Chamba while another to Katra from Manali when the incident took place.

Mandi deputy commissioner Sandeep Kadam told reporters that the death toll was likely to increase.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and discussed with him the flood situation in the State where almost 320 NDRF personnel have been rushed. "Immediate relief will be provided", Mr Singh said.
