Eagles trade WR Jordan Matthews to Bills for CB Ronald Darby

Buffalo Bills make a splash, acquire Jordan Matthews and EJ Gaines

The moves were made day after Buffalo opened its preseason with a 17-10 loss to Minnesota.

Gaines was valuable defensive back in the Rams' rotation.

The Rams need playmakers for an offense that finished last in the National Football League over the past two seasons.

As for Darby, the Eagles receive a cornerback who accounted for 69 combined tackles and 12 passes defensed in 2016. Darby has two career interceptions, with both coming in his rookie season (2015). In 46 career games, Matthews has 225 catches for nearly 2,700 yards and 19 touchdowns. Watkins required a second operation in January after aggravating the injury last season. Lynn started as the Bills receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator previous year and finished the season as the team's interim coach after Rex Ryan was sacked a week before the final game.

Buffalo needed a wide receiver to replace Sammy Watkins, who they traded to the Los Angeles Rams earlier today.

Darby was expected to serve as the Bills' No. 1 cornerback this season after Stephon Gilmore left the team in free agency.

Matthews had 225 catches for 2,673 yards in his three seasons with the Eagles, but apparently was deemed expendable after Phialdelphia's offseason additions of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith and a summer emergence by former first-round draft pick Nelson Agholor.

The Bills paid a massive price under previous General Manager Doug Whaley to acquire Watkins three years ago, trading first-round picks in 2014 and "15, as well as a 2015 fourth-rounder, to move up five spots". Darby, selected with the 50th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, has started all 29 games that he's played in so far in his career.
