Drew Pomeranz exits Red Sox-Yankees game early

- Friday marked Boston's 31st come-from-behind victory of the season, including each of its last three games against the Yankees. The deficit: four games.

Looking at the rest of the year for the New York Yankees, they have seven more games against the Red Sox.

With the Red Sox bullpen having blown a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning against the Yankees, Reed entered with one out in the frame and stopped the bleeding.

The Red Sox unveiled a display in Fenway Park to honor former outfielder Tony Conigliaro, who was almost killed when blinded when he was beaned by Jack Hamilton of the California Angels on August 18, 1967. I guess the Red Sox want to keep the gates open for a little while to rack up some concession sales.

Four singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly had Boston ahead, 7-6, with the crowd chanting, "Yankees suck!" and reliever Tommy Kahnle struggling to collect himself on the mound.

Prior to leaving, Pomeranz had allowed four hits and no runs while striking out four in 3.1 innings with Boston leading 2-0.

Before the game, NY manager Joe Girardi said Aroldis Chapman, who has been bothered by a hamstring problem and poor pitching, was still his closer.

Notes & quotes: Playing in his third rehab game with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Greg Bird hit two home runs.

Didi Gregorius then walked and Chase Headley singled.

The Yankees left 25 on base and went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Heath Hembree then came in an walked Frazier to load the bases before Ronald Torreyes hit a two-run double to left to put the Yankees up, 5-3. He grounded out in a taut, eight-pitch at-bat against Kelly to end the sixth.

The seventh-inning whiff extended his strikeout streak to 35 consecutive games.

"There's been a number of wild-card teams that have either won it all or advanced very deep", Red Sox manager John Farrell said before the game.

Pomeranz appeared to tweak something, and manager John Farrell made a decision to remove him from the game after he attempted two warm-up pitches. Starter Drew Pomeranz had left in the fourth with an apparent leg injury.
