"Tom is playing well this camp".

After a 15-for-25 night in the preseason opener, first-round pick Deshaun Watson went 3 of 10 for 102 yards in the win over the Patriots.

"He's got a really good command of the offense", O'Brien said of Savage, via the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson.

Savage completed 8 of 9 passes for 98 yards, one score and no interceptions for a pristine 149.1 passer rating in almost one quarter of action before being replaced by Watson.

Savage started the last two games of the season for the Texans last season, but he suffered a concussion in the season finale, forcing him to miss the postseason.

The Texans have been impressed with how Watson has progressed during the offseason activities and training camp, and O'Brien has praised the rookie frequently.

But after two games, Texans coach Bill O'Brien is remaining steadfast in his plan from Day One.

"It's good to be back", linebacker Brian Cushing said. "Let's put the cards on table - that's what it is". That's what it is. After Tuesday's practice, the head coach explained some of the reasons why the four-year veteran in control under center. "The way that we want to play, the style that we want to play relative to getting guys lined up, relative to cadence, relative to protection points and route reads and putting guys in the right spot - Tom is ahead of Deshaun on that".
