A still from Raanjhana a movie that came into the spotlight for its depiction of stalking

Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala, and his friend, Ashish Kumar, both facing charges of allegedly stalking and an attempted abduction of a 29-year-old young woman, were on Saturday sent to judicial custody till August 25 by a local court.

The counsel for both the accused, Surya Prakash told The Statesman that so far Barala and Kumar's families have instructed him to not to apply for the bail as the family members are fully confident that they were wrongly implicated in the case. Vikas is the son of Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Haryana unit President Subhash Barala. However, based on the public prosecutor's plea, the court granted two-day police custody of the accused on grounds that they were needed to reconstruct the crime scene and establishing motive behind the crime. Regarding the incident, there was a huge outrage on the streets and in Parliament. After interrogation, both were again arrested by the police.

The development comes after the police earlier released a video footage showing the one of the accused (Ashish) buying alcohol before chasing Varnika Kundu's auto on the night of August 4.

A Chandigarh court earlier today sent Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar, who were accused in a stalking case, to two-day police custody.

"We are investigating facts and will take strict action if some lapse is found", Gurugram's Commissioner of Police Sandeep Khiwar said.

After the incident, Kundu filed a complaint and the duo was booked on charges of stalking and attempt to kidnap.
