Bryan Robson hails 'masterstroke' Manchester United signing Nemanja Matic

West Ham United's Pedro Obiang celebrates scoring his side's second goal of the game during the Premier League match at St Mary's Stadium Southampton

Despite their sixth-placed finish last season, Lingard believes United's trophy haul - and subsequent Champions League qualification - has altered the atmosphere at Old Trafford, which has only benefited their arrivals during the transfer window.

"You look at the squad in depth and we have got power and pace as well as the quality", said Robson.

"It's a good start for us".

Matic was exceptional against West Ham as he settled in nearly instantly, showcasing he doesn't only have the ability to control the game, but also to hold onto the ball and dribble through opposition players, seeing him setting up counter attacks further up the field. "I feel good playing that way, but it depends on what the manager wants", he was quoted as saying to reporters.

Mourinho got his man and Matic after his impressive league debut against West Ham will once again be one of the first names on the teamsheet when the Red Devils travel to Swansea City this weekend.

Now he is at Manchester United - different team and more experience'. You can see against West Ham everybody was getting along well and playing for each other. "I grew up a lot in Italy and I have come back as a man".

While Romelu Lukaku is the biggest buy for the Red Devils this summer, the signing of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea has been adjudged "the steal of a secret weapon".

Asked if the mood has changed in the dressing room, Lingard said: "You could say that. He can sit back and stabilise the play for us". He could make his Premier League bow against United, but there will likely be no Fernando Llorente as he continues his comeback from a broken arm while Nathan Dyer and Ryan Blair are long-term absentees.

One thing which definitely works in Mourinho's favour but could also make predicting a United line-up hard in 2017-18 is the versatility of his squad.

"I think his age helps and obviously he comes from a club in the Premier League so he's not needed very long to settle in at all".
