To make the M5 lighter, BMW also used a carbon fiber room on top of the Carbon Core chassis used in the standard variants.

The smart new M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, with M-specific software, aims to offer the best of all worlds: the traction safety net of 4WD on slippery roads, with the precision and agility of rear-wheel propulsion. As expected, the sports sedan is powered by a 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 engine delivering 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to go zero-to-62 miles per hour (0-100 km/h) in 3.4 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited 155-mph top speed. The 4WD mode is designed for maximum traction, while 4WD Sport sends more power rearward, allowing for more slip, and the 2WD mode makes the M5 act as if it were rear-drive - though BMW claims 2WD mode was created "experienced and highly skilled driver in mind". That said, new additions including M badging, a red starter button, and a bespoke steering wheel and gear selector help to make the auto feel special. A special edition of the outgoing M5, sold in extremely limited quantities in the United States, produced nearly the same power. That's why you drive under the speed limit, kids.

The new BMW M5 sedan's powerful engine will enable it to sprint from zero to 62 miles per hour (mph) in just around 3.5 seconds. The BMW M5 has been described as having tons of power with enough speed and good looks to serve as a top notch ride in the world of Payback. This new system allows the M5 to reach new heights of dynamic performance and delivers poise in all driving situations.

BMW told us that the new M5 will be offered exclusively with an 8-speed automatic-and that's it.

Along with the new, bright red M buttons, there are a few little touches to remind drivers they're in a seriously quick sedan. The engine is mated to an eight-speed M Steptronic autobox with three modes and steering-mounted shift paddles. There will be however an optional M Driver's Package that raises top speed to 189 miles per hour. There are optional M carbon ceramic brakes, featuring gold-painted calipers and weigh nearly 51 lbs (23 kgs) less. The new M5 will feature standard-fit 19in wheels shod with 275/40 front and 285/40 rear tyres or optional 20in rims with 275/35 front and 285/35 rear rubber.

What the video does show is a quite restrained M5, with the latest 5 Series styling enhanced with a front end sporting big air-gulping intakes, bigger wheel arches, front wing vents, big quad exhausts, rear diffuser and black carbon fibre highlights.

Extended Merino leather is standard, as are sports seats with integral head restraints and thicker side bolsters. The driver gets to grasp a sporty three-spoke wheel with cool little red drive mode buttons at the thumb positions.

If you've seen the new 5 Series' interior, then you've seen 90 percent of the M5's interior, too.

BMW Australia is yet to announce local prices, but the new M5 will go on sale in Europe during the first half of 2018 (European spring) priced from €117,900.
