Washington Nationals get two pitchers in trade with Oakland Athletics

Los Angeles Dodgers Cody Bellinger celebrates with Trayce Thompson, Logan Forsythe and Corey Seager after the Dodgers defeated the Miami Marlins 7-1 in a baseball game Saturday

The A's acquired reliever Blake Treinen and two of the Nationals' top 10 prospects, minor league left-hander Jesus Luzardo and minor league infielder Sheldon Neuse.

Gennett, who is having a big season after being claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers in late March, is 4-for-8 with a double, three home runs and six RBIs against Strasburg, including 2-for-3 with a double and homer against him in a 6-5, 11-inning loss at Washington on June 23.

Doolittle, 30, has yet to allow a hit to a left-handed batter in 23 appearances this season. He is 1-0 with three saves, a 3.38 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements. They also hosted, planned and financed a Thanksgiving dinner for refugee families in Chicago, which is where Dolan is from, according to the New York Times. I would prioritize Madson over Doolittle.

The problem, as it has been for months now, is everybody knows the Nationals need bullpen help.

All you can really ask for in this push for a World Series. If we assume that the Nationals will have 20 more save opportunities between now and the end of the season then it is not inconcievable that both pitchers could wind up with ten saves or more. They trade for a pair of them and refuse to name either the closer. In exchange, they get a power arm in Treinen that could become a closer down the road. Things got so bad that 34-year-old Matt Albers, who went a major league record 461 relief appearances without recording a save, finally tallied one.

Nationals closer Koda Glover converted eight of 10 save chances but has not pitched since June 10 because of severe inflammation of the rotator cuff.

Madson served as the Athletics closer last season before settling in as their setup man this year. That means the Nationals are picking up the entire contracts of both Madson and Doolittle, which lessened the return for the A's. He was originally selected in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. In addition, right-handed pitcher Joe Ross was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. In 40 games with Oakland this year, the 36-year-old righty posted a 0.79 WHIP that ranked fifth in the American League, and a 4.2 percent walk rate that was fourth lowest in the AL.
