United States wins Gold Cup group

Gold Cup U.S. Soccer Bruce Arena

With Panama defeating Martinique in the first game of the day, the United States men's national team needed a win of three goals of more in its match against Nicaragua to clinch the top spot in Group B of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Bruce Arena made 11 changes to his starting lineup from Wednesday's 3-2 win over Martinique, re-inserting Sporting KC's American trio of Matt Besler (42 caps), Dom Dwyer (3 caps) and Graham Zusi (51 caps). Panama's 3-0 shutout of Martinique in the early game meant the USMNT started knowing they would need the three points and three goals to take 1st-place.

The USMNT will play in Philadelphia on July 19 vs. the third-place team from either Group A or Group C. They will know their opponent after the conclusion of Group C play on Sunday.

Group B concludes with the USMNT taking 1st-place with Panama 2nd on the goals scored tiebreaker. In the 56th minute, Zusi forced an errant pass that Bedoya intercepted and played to Dwyer.

Arroyo doubled the advantage in the 60th minute, collecting a carom off a corner kick and depositing a left-footed shot that deflected into the net.

Incredibly, the USA scrambled for the third goal, which enabled the American team to edge Panama for the top spot in the group, after missing not one, but two penalty kicks in the second half - first by Dom Dwyer, then by Joe Corona. It took a slight deflection and beat Lorente to the near corner for Rowe's first global goal. The U.S. will face El Salvador, Honduras or Jamaica.

The Americans got another chance from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after Dany Cadena handled the ball in the box on Bedoya's long run.

But the second goal came just seven minutes later, with Bedoya providing the assist once again. On the ensuing free kick, Miazga scored the dramatic match-winner for his first US goal.
