Sushant Singh Rajput, who was hoping to bag the Best Actor award for MS Dhoni: The Untold Story was not particularly happy with Shahid's win.

For everyone's surprise, Anupam Kher is the only actor who got the award for the "Best Actor In A Supporting Role" for "M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story" wherein he played Dhoni's father, Pan Singh Dhoni. Actress Sonam Kapoor's Neerja bagged the Best Film Award.

Filmmaker Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil dominated the music categories.

The music category saw Pritam winning the Best Music Direction for "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil", and Amitabh Bhattacharya bagging the Best Lyrics accolade for "Channa mereya".Among the singers, Kanika Kapoor's "Da da dase" and Tulsi Kumar "Soch na sake" shared the award in the female category, while Amit Mishra won it in the men's category.

The academy selected gender equality as its cause of the year, despite a film industry often criticised for depicting women as meek and subjecting characters to aggressive wooing by dominant male leads. However, it was not all smooth-sailing for the duo as the audience booed at them several times during the show at the jam-packed MetLife stadium. Alia, who also won the Myntra Style Icon Award, began the proceedings of the night with her performance on "Tamma tamma", "Ladki beautiful" and "Badri ki dulhaniya". The best actor in a comic role went to Varun Dhawan for "Dishoom", Alia Bhatt picked up a second trophy for Mystra Style Icon, and IIFA named Taapsee Pannu their woman of the year. The multi-day extravaganza was attended by stars like Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. He and his alleged girlfriend Kriti Sanon gave an wonderful dance performance together in NY on July 15.
