Pakistani footballers who will play alongside the global players include Kaleemullah, Saddam Hussain, Saadullah, Yousuf Butt, Abdul Aziz, Muhammad Essa, Ghulam Rasool, and star of street child football team Mohammad Razzik.

Later in the day, the players met Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa who thanked them on their visit to Pakistan.

The players arrived in the Asian nation amid tight security.

Brazilian football celebrity Ronaldinho along with other seven top footballers including Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs have arrived at Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) here on Saturday morning, escalating nationwide fans' ecstasy ahead of two exhibition matches, ARY News reported.

The five worldwide players accompanying Ronaldinho and Giggs are: Dutch star George Boateng, former England goalkeeper David James, former French players Robert Pires and Nicolas Anelka, and Portugal's Luis Boa Morte.

The foreign players have reached Karachi from Islamabad. In addition to the global stars, the teams will also consist of Pakistan's emerging football talent.

"I am excited at the prospect of playing in Pakistan", he said in a statement.

The two exhibition matches will be held in Karachi and Lahore under the auspices of the Leisure Leagues and World Group who claim they want to promote the sport in Pakistan.

Giggs, who retired after a long career with United in 2014, said he was "privileged" to take part.
