Red Sox 'moving closer' to acquiring Todd Frazier

Madison Bumgarner made a decent return from the disabled list in Major League Baseball, while the New York Yankees won a marathon clash on Saturday. By the time Mookie Betts hit a two-run homer in Sunday's nightcap, the Sox had gone 24 innings without scoring a run. We played pretty well. The Red Sox, who are taking a $49 million hit on third baseman Pablo Sandoval's contract after designating him for assignment last week (while underscoring the need for another third baseman), want to keep the cost for Frazier as minimal as possible.

Boston (52-41) salvaged a split of its four-game series with NY (47-43) after losing the first game of the doubleheader 3-0 earlier Sunday afternoon. Aaron Judge now leads the American League (and the National League too) of amount of home runs, at 30.

The Yankees have a better offense and the Red Sox have a better rotation, though both teams are getting serviceable contributions in both departments.

Don't feel too bad for Judge.

"I think it can, depending on who it is", Holliday said.

"I assumed that he was going to tag [first] base and throw to second for the tag", he said.

Regardless, Girardi's team is right back where it started when it reconvened after the break, which based on closer Aroldis Chapman's unraveling in the ninth inning on Friday night ordinarily might be considered a positive start to the second half of a season that hasn't held almost as much promise lately as it once did.

Sabathia pitched six shutout innings in a 3-0 victory in the first game, which gave the Yankees consecutive victories for the first time since June 11-12. "Those are the type of plays, they rarely happen".

With Boston on pace to win over 90 games and beginning to separate, albeit 2 ½ games, from the rest of the American League East, Dombrowski is likely thinking about roster improvements while eyeing October.

With the series wrapped up, third-place NY trails Boston by 3.5 games in the American League East (and the second-place Tampa Bay Rays by half a game).

The key, Girardi said, is Judge's reaction, which hasn't been any different than when things were going well.

Last night's loss was more of the same. There's still plenty of time left in the season to make a comeback, and I'm going to try and prove it to you with a look at an extreme case.
