Meira Kumar meets Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati

Aam Aadmi Party to support Meira Kumar in July 17 Presidential election

Opposition's presidential nominee Meira Kumar today met Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav separately during her day-long visit to the state capital in Lucknow.

Senior party leaders Sanjay Singh, Dilip Pandey and Ashutosh made the announcement after the AAP's Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting.

"The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) headed by (Delhi) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has chose to support the united opposition candidate Meira Kumar", party leader Sanjay Singh said here.

"Our ideology, however, aims to integrate people of different section of society", said the former Congress MP and country's first woman Lok Sabha speaker.

Mr. Singh said the AAP was also backing Ms. Kumar because the Opposition had a major role to play in the country's politics in the present circumstances.

Leaders had said Ms. Kumar's political credentials and history made her a suitable candidate.

Mr Sirsa also urged HS Phoolka to resign from the party (AAP) and as an MLA instead of supporting a Congress candidate Meira Kumar as he was locked in a bitter fight against them in 1984 Sikh riot cases.

"The election of the President and the Vice-President should be above partisan politics and we would have preferred a consensus candidate. In such a scenario, the Aam Aadmi Party supports the joint opposition candidate", Singh said.

The tour itinerary of Meira Kumar revealed that she will arrive at the Biju Patnaik Airport at 11 o'clock and will meet the Congress MLAs at 12.30PM. The AAP had already ruled out support to NDA's candidate Ram Nath Kovind. June 28 is the last date for filing of nominations for presidential poll.
