Hamas says target Israelis after Jerusalem site attack

For the second day, the Israeli authorities closed Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound on Saturday following a shootout that left five people dead.

The police then announced the closure of the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and prohibition of Friday prayers amid the tensions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, however, that metal detectors would be installed at entrances to the site, while cameras would also be mounted in the area.

The BYU Jerusalem Center sits halfway up Mount Scopus overlooking the Mount of Olives and the Old City, and it's about a 25-minute walk from the center to Lions' Gate.

He said "the Israeli project is to remove as many Palestinians as possible" and to replace them with Zionists from around the world, adding that the Tel Aviv regime resorts to violence, demolition of Palestinian homes and terrorism to achieve that goal.

Meanwhile, Lane said the shooting incident in the Jerusalem al-Quds is "tragic" and "it is to be condemned". Two of the previous attackers were Jordanians.

According to the agency, Abbas called upon Netanyahu to end the closure of the holy site, while Netanyahu asked Abbas that all sides should remain calm, as reported by Wafa.

According to his son Jihad Hussein, he was later detained by Israeli police, who declined to comment.

The entire old city of Hebron is under Israeli control, and the mosque was converted into a military post.

Jews are allowed to visit, but are banned from praying there to avoid provoking tensions.

"The sanctity of religious sites should be respected as places for reflection, not violence", Guterres said. Police pursued the assailants back into the compound before exchanging fire.

In the past two years, Palestinians have killed 45 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British tourist in stabbings, shootings and attacks using cars to ram into Israeli civilians and troops.

But many were shot dead in protests and clashes, while some were killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.
