While he had her phone, however, he created Hotmail and Facebook accounts under a fictitious name to distribute and post nude images of Ms. Plaskett and her husband.

The charges stem from a 2016 incident in which personal photographs of Plaskett surfaced on the Internet shortly before a primary election.

McCullum worked as a legislative counsel and Browne-Lewis was a scheduler. According to the press release, McCullum sent text messages and emails to Browne-Louis, alerting her of the misdemeanor that he was about to commit and about the private content that he was in possession of. The indictment alleges that Mr. McCullum used the social media accounts to encourage others to spread the images and videos in the U.S. Virgin Islands, whose people Ms. Plaskett represents. She is being charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly making "false, incomplete, and misleading statements" about her involvement in the episode to law enforcement during the course of their investigation.

According to court documents on Thursday, Juan McCullum, 35, took "private, nude images and videos" from the cellphone of Delegate Stacey Plaskett in March 2016 after offering to assist in repairing her malfunctioning, password-protected cellular phone by taking her iPhone to an Apple store, reports CNN. Stacey Plaskett (D), who released a statement on Thursday which read: "Last year, my privacy was invaded, which was followed by an organized smear campaign and defamatory press reports concerning both me and my family".

When the video initially emerged, Plaskett stated: "The theft and distribution of these personal images via the internet marks a new low in Virgin Islands politics".

"To say my family and I are greatly upset would be a tremendous understatement". The indictment also alleged that McCullum texted Browne-Louis as early as July 2, 2016, and emailed her some of the material.

Browne-Louis's LinkedIn profile says she is an executive assistant for the U.S. Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority (USVIEDA), which could not be reached to confirm Browne-Louis's employment status. McCullum faces up to 5 years in prison, while Browne-Louis could face a maximum of 20 years of incarceration, which could include jail time or restrictions on movement and electronic device use.

'Our office is now working with the Capitol Police and the FBI and I can confirm that an active investigation is underway to find out who committed this crime and anyone else who may have been involved, ' said Jerome Murray, Plaskett's chief of staff after the images were distributed online in.

McCullum's first court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
