These were things people had forgotten during the JD (U)-BJP rule. His stand has strengthened with speculations that a section of leaders in Nitish Kumar's party was also unhappy with his decision.

On Thursday, he took oath as the CM of Bihar for the sixth time while Sushil Modi, top BJP leader, was sworn-in as the deputy CM.

Kumar claimed he had the support of 132 legislators, 10 more than the number required to show a majority in the 243-member assembly. These include 71 of JD (U), BJP 53, RLSP 2, LJP 2, HAM 1 and three Independents.

Even though the RJD has chose to challenge the governor's decision, senior Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Hegde said if Kumar has the assurance of support from a majority of the MLAs and there is reasonable material for the governor to be satisfied that he has the majority there was no reason why he should not have been called. "Mandate of people should be respected". "The decision is in Bihar's interest and for its development", Nitish Kumar said after taking oath.

The Chief Minister's breakfast gathering today was a reciprocal gesture.

When asked about a possible alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Kumar said "Let us see what will happen in the future". The meeting was also attended by JD-U General Secretary Arun Srivastava and spokesperson Javed Raza.

He alleged that Nitish Kumar had gone to Raj Bhavan at midnight as half of JD-U MLAs were "in our touch", he added.

Questions on whether JD (U) MPs would be made ministers at the Centre and support to the NDA's vice-presidential nominee M. Venkaiah Naidu hung in the air. "We all thought that he will fight the fascist tendencies but he has now become a part of it", Veerendra Kumar said. He took this decision without discussing it with any senior leader of the party.

While Lalu said Nitish had "backstabbed" the people of Bihar, Nitish had said that it was becoming impossible for him to operate under the current circumstances.

Nitish Kumar's move marks his return to the NDA after nearly four years. Nitish Kumar led JD (U) had walked out of the NDA in July 2013 after Narendra Modi was nominated as head of the BJP's campaign committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The RJD MLA said that senior leaders of the party had even suggested Tejashwi Yadav's resignation, but Lalu and his son were stubborn about it. BJP's main man in Bihar, Sushil Kumar Modi, was the one behind this complicated, yet fast, manoeuvre. Nitish Kumar knew that he is accused in a murder and an Arms Act case under Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC, which also declared this in elections affidavit. In just 12 hours, Mr Kumar managed to transform the arithmetic of Indian politics. "For the sake of power and personal gains, they compromise with anything".

It would have been more principled of Nitish to dissolve his government and seek a fresh mandate from the electorate rather than hang on to office with the help of those who, till now, were his political foes. "Democracy will be weakened".
