US Open filled with limitless possibilities, few stars

World number two McIlroy meanwhile - who earlier in the week had advised players unable to hit the fairways to "pack their bags" - was left at five-over-par after a second round 71.

Big hitters Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day were expected to thrive on the wide open fairways of Erin Hills, hosting Wisconsin's first U.S. Open.

"I think that's a testament to how good the golf course is and how well it's set up", Harman said.

"Having a win this year at Honda, being in contention at majors in the past, and having The PLAYERS win has definitely done a lot for me", Fowler said. After an impressive opening seven-under 65, the first-round leader proved mortal, scraping his way around the brawny course en route to a far more pedestrian one-over 73. Jamie Lovemark and J.B.

Positioned 299 yards from the pin on the par-5 18th, and needing to hole out the shot to make the weekend, he lashed at a 3-wood that hit about pin high, then rolled off the back of the green. Reavie had five birdies in a six-hole stretch beginning on No. 11.

Casey is not the only Englishman atop the leaderboard as he is joined by Tommy Fleetwood, who had an excellent round of 70, and is a group of four all at the top of the leaderboard going into round 3. "It was a bit of a roller coaster".

Koepka faded on the back nine with two bogeys on the home straight, while Fowler slumped with three bogeys in a row just after the turn and could not battle his way back to top spot. The next one went long, he chipped up to 12 feet and took two putts from there.

After Sergio Garcia finally won his first major title this year at The Masters, the "best player yet to win a Major" label quickly attached itself to Fowler. 16 (getting an awkward bunker shot up and down) and 17 (where he cooked his second from the rough over the green) just to make some pars and give himself some momentum to hold onto heading into the weekend. If you get four or five, that's pretty good.

Friday wasn't almost as favorable for the world's three-top ranked players, none of whom will move onto the weekend.

Day carded a three-over 75 Friday to finish a disappointing 10 over.

Jason Day's struggles continued. He followed his 71 from yesterday with a 74 on Day 2.

Thomas, decked out in fluorescent pink trousers, was on the move quickly with a birdie-birdie start and had an even hotter finish to his front nine, carding birdies on four-of-five closing holes, including the last three to move to seven-under.

McIlroy was playing just his seventh tournament of 2017 due to a rib injury.

Under clear skies and warm sunshine, the Erin Hills course still offered plenty of encouragement after a day of record low-scoring on Thursday.

Day and McIlroy never had much of a chance, both out of the picture before Johnson even teed off.

"If you look at the golf course and you even talk to me, Jason or Rory, this course sets up flawless for us", he said. As we all know, this game is all about putting.
