Congressman Steve Scalise is in surgery for a third time at a Washington, D.C. hospital.

Scalise graduated from LSU in 1989, where he studied political science and computer programming and was twice elected speaker of the Student Government Association. The bullet caused massive bleeding, and damaged bones and internal organs.

He was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center Wednesday and is in critical condition recovering from surgery.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but 'we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point'. Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.

The annual tradition of the game took on new significance after a gunman shot Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and four others at a Wednesday practice for the game in Alexandria, Va. In the immediate aftermath Wednesday the extent of his injuries was not widely known.

The game at Nationals Park, Washington DC, carried on a century-old bipartisan ritual, this one tinged with worry about Louisiana Republican Mr Scalise, 51, and the determination to answer the attack by coming together in sport.

Doctors also said Scalise needed at several transfusions.

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock. Hodgkinson died after officers in Mr Scalise's security detail fired back at him. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.

"By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy". President Donald Trump visited with Scalise's family earlier Thursday and later commented that, "He's in some trouble". "But as you all know, tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning, beyond anything that we would have thought".

"And let's keep the Warmbier family and the Scalise family and all of the victims of the congressional shooting in our hearts and prayers", Trump continued.

Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.

Close friends say they are confident Scalise will pull through.
