'Spongebob Squarepants' Musical to Open on Broadway This Fall

Get your jellyfish catchers ready, Spongebob Squarepants is coming to Broadway at The Palace Theatre this Fall.

The hit animated series that inspired the "SpongeBob SquarePants" musical can lay claim to a sweeping fanbase of all ages: The second feature film based on the property, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water", was the top-grossing film that weekend it opened. Several members of the Chicago cast will transfer with the production, including newcomer Ethan Slater, who will make his Broadway debut in the title role.

In the musical, SpongeBob and the denizens of Bikini Bottom must rally to save their undersea world from total annihilation. Music supervision will come from Tony victor Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal"), with Kyle Jarrow ("Whisper House") providing the show's book.

The new musical will transfer to Broadway at the Palace Theatre in November. Kyle Jarrow - the television and stage writer who is also in the band Sky-Pony with his wife, the Tony-nominated actress Lauren Worsham - wrote the book.

Tom Kitt, composer of "Next to Normal", will be the music supervisor and orchestrator. Lily Cooper plays SpongeBob's pal Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel; Danny Skinner as another pal Patrick, a starfish; and Gavin Lee as grumpy neighbor Squidward. At the Disco and even David Bowie. With additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton.

The news was announced after the show ran in Chicago last summer and received critical praise. The full cast will be named later. The design team includes scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Kevin Adams, projection design by Peter Nigrini and sound design by Walter Trarbach.
