Sergey Kovalev to appeal Andre Ward stoppage over low blows

Las Vegas. Ward is scheduled to fight Sergey Kovalev in a light heavyweight championship boxing match Saturday in Las Vegas

Complaints by Kovalev about another low blow were ignored by referee Weeks and Ward seized upon his pained opponent, uncorking a huge right that left him on unsteady legs. It is historic. And the Bay View has been documenting Andre Ward's career since 2009.

There's reportedly a sense that Ward vs lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson could be a go, despite rival network affiliations.

Still, he's eager to clear up any remaining doubts when they meet Saturday night in a 175-pound title rematch. "I think both of us were better in this fight", he said". So I just have to keep my head down and keep working. The match was highly anticipated and lived up to the hype with Ward winning a controversial decision. Kovalev jabs. Apparently a low blow by Ward and Ward comes back with a hard left.

Sergey has since deleted the video meme, but the backlash was swift from those who said that making it sound as if Ward - a devout Christian - dropped nonstop n-bombs was racist.

Whoever Ward decides to fight next, they will have to fight the best fight of their lives if they're going to beat Ward. Why get away from it? Hes not used to someone pushing the action.”.

'Kovalev also was probably up in the fight, at least by a little bit. He was the aggressor backing up Ward who seemed content to wait for his opportunity to land a punch. He's a good kid, I know him, but I just see things with him in particular. For him it was like fighting a heavy bag.”. Kovalev looks to be breathing heavily.

The build-up to this undoubted superfight sequel - unimaginatively dubbed "The Rematch" - has however been overshadowed by the confirmation of Floyd Mayweather's behemoth of a fight with UFC legend Conor McGregor. "He didn't hurt me. It is what it is".

There was genuine dislike between the two fighters, born largely out of their first fight.

Ward won the first fight by a unanimous decision though many thought Kovalev deserved the victory after knocking down Ward in the second round and appearing to have the edge in some tight rounds.

Kovalev claimed he overtrained for the first bout and had nothing when he went into the ring. Ward wanted to prove that his previous win over Sergey Kovalev was not a gift and Sergey wanted to show that he was a victim of poor scoring.

"When I see his face I want to bash him", Kovalev said. "I'm right where I need to be".

Ward (31-0, 15 knockouts) isn't about to invite Kovalev over for dinner, either. Kovalev said he was gassed because he over-trained.

Kovalev said he doesn't know what happened and can't explain why he was stopped by the referee. “Im not ideal but I make an effort to be an asset to the game.”.

HBO will replay the fight next Saturday, Jun. 24 beginning at 10 p.m. ET. The first bout was on pay-per-view, too, and drew only a reported 150,000 buys, despite it being an attractive matchup for boxing fans. Ward earned the second victory against Kovalev, this time by TKO at 2 minutes 29 seconds of the eighth round. Ward said that will play in his favor in the rematch.

Ward remains undefeated in 32 fights and told Max Kellerman of HBO after the fight that he is the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. "I knew he was hurt, trying to cover up". "I've never seen somebody knocked out on a low blow until tonight, and I hope I never have to see it again".
