Seventeen players shot in the 60s at Erin Hills, which at 7,845 yards was the longest course in major championship history. Day added a 75 to his first-round 79 which included two triple bogeys. But he missed a pair of 10-foot birdie chances in that stretch, and one of the birdies he made was a two-putt from 20 feet on the par-5 seventh. If there's soft conditions, maybe we tuck a hole location a little bit more, versus if we get real firm conditions and it gets windy, we're sitting there talking among ourselves saying, 'How do we tone this thing down?' His third shot went over the back of the green, and it took him five shots from there, including a chip that rolled back to his feet. Over the final few holes, with Justin Rose struggling to try to make the cut and McIlroy finally playing well, Day was simply trying to stay out of the way.

Matsuyama will be the top-ranked player at Erin Hills over the next two days after Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day all failed to make the cut.

On Friday afternoon, an elderly spectator at the course died while watching the tournament, according to officials. There's no denying that the Erin Hills Open is different from your normal fare.

At the US Open, the top 60 players and anyone tied for a position in the top 60 will make it through to the weekend. Five players were two shots off the lead.
