Rocket League Cross-Platform Play Is Being Blocked by One Company

Microsoft reportedly reached out to Sony several times to encourage cross-platform play. The Nintendo Switch version of the game will fully support the console's cross network play and will feature exclusive battle cars, and customization options. The same function has also been enabled for another hit game, "Rocket League", which was developed by Psyonix. What's more is that it doesn't even have to be Fallout 4, fans of the series would jump at the excuse to replay either Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

"In terms of pure greenlighting for when this project started, three months ago", says Psyonix Vice-President Jeffrey Dunham says to US Gamer, "If you wanna talk about when we first started investigating, messing with dev kits, late previous year was about when we first started looking at it".

Not that he had to tell me. Do you think Sony's reasons for not allowing cross-play on their platform for Minecraft and Rocket League are legitimate? For Rocket League, however, the game will run at 720p regardless of if the Switch is docked or being used in tablet mode. The strong sales performance that the Switch now has is being acknowledged not just by Nintendo and retailers like GameStop but also by Nintendo's competitors Microsoft and Sony.

We'll have more on the Switch version of Rocket League in the coming months.

Obviously the main buzz surrounding Xbox at E3 2017 is about the Xbox One X, but there has also been a strong line-up of new games from Microsoft. If Rockstar could perform the same technical wizardry with the Nintendo Switch it would surely be a favourite among owners of the system. Curious, I asked him if there were any fan suggestions that bordered on the ridiculous.

Recently, Sony commented that they are simply concerned for the safety of the younger PlayStation players so they are saying "No" on the matter of cross-play with gamers on the Xbox and Nintendo platforms. "That's all we need to do". He also said that Sony has to consider them first. That's gaming now. Gaming should be community-driven. "The only thing that we know is that we can't do it yet". This will be an adjustment if you're used to seeing Rocket League in 1080p.
