Portugal 2-2 Mexico - Player of the Match - Ricardo Quaresma

Confederations Cup Not the result we wanted rues Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal will play Mexico in a Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match scheduled for Sunday, June 1.

The strike was ruled out following advice to referee Nestor Pitana from the video replay team.

Cristiano Ronaldo, coming off a tumultuous week off the field, had set up Ricardo Quaresma's opening goal for Portugal, and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez hit Mexico's equalizer just before halftime.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Raphael Guerreiro failed to deal with a cross into the box and Carlos Vela teed up Hernandez, who met the cross with a diving header.

Portugal had to settle for a 2-2 draw in their opening match of the 2017 Confederations Cup, after twice squandering a one goal lead against Mexico.

The result left European champion Portugal and Gold Cup victor Mexico trailing host Russian Federation in Group A. Russian Federation opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday.

The result leaves hosts Russian Federation top of Group A, following their 2-0 victory over New Zealand yesterday.

Russian Federation are next up for Portugal in Moscow's Spartak Stadium on Wednesday, while Mexico face New Zealand in Sochi on the same day. He scored the goal, which was largely down to Ronaldo, but his cool head made the chance exceptionally easy.

There was huge focus on Ronaldo after news broke on Friday of his desire to leave Real Madrid and quit Spain for good because of his unhappiness at a tax investigation against him, but he frequently cut an isolated figure up front due to Portugal coach Fernando Santos' cautious tactics.

"It wasn't the result that we wanted", he said. Guillermo Ochoa had raced off his line to close the angle but Quaresma's cool first-touch took him past the keeper and he promptly put the ball into an empty net.

Video assistant referees are in action at the Confederations Cup, and they instantly chalked off Gomes's goal.

Mexico's all-time leading scorer still had time before the end of the half to blaze over from a good position.

All in all I think Portugal winning is going to be the final result and as a result of this, I think this is also the best bet to make since we are getting a pretty good price on this wager. "I have a pact with the players and we treat these personal matters away from the national team".

Mexico weren't down and out though, demonstrating their incredible team spirit to storm back with a stoppage time equaliser, ensuring the two teams took a point each.
