GOP's Scalise Upgraded to Serious Condition After More Surgery

House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise on Capitol Hill in 2015

The investigation into Wednesday's shooting at the practice for this week's congressional charity baseball game continues, and investigators say the gunman was carrying a list containing the names of House Republicans when he opened fire. He died after officers in Scalise's security detail and local police fired at him.

He had been in critical condition since arriving at the hospital in shock after the shooting at a baseball field where members of Congress were practicing.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with loved ones", said the tweet sent from Scalise's account.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Centre. He was shot only once, but the high-powered-rifle round traveled from his left hip across his pelvis and shattered when it struck bone.

It is not yet clear if the names on the list were intended targets, the source said. Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident. Griner remained hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.

Lobbyist Matt Mika, who was shot several times and critically wounded, has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said.

Democrat Cedric Richmond, a fellow Louisiana congressman, said as many others did that Scalise is a fighter.
