Four-way tie at US Open

Tommy Fleetwood happy to salvage a bogey at the last as a third-round 68 kept him within a shot of the lead at the US Open.

The Spaniard posted a one-under 71 in Friday's second round for a three-under-par total of 141 as the afternoon wave of players were beginning their rounds at Erin Hills.

"I showed up for the last six holes, anyway", said McIlroy.

"The greens were still receptive to good shots, but they were firmer and faster", said Fowler. "There's no secret that I'm very fiery and a competitor and I've let my emotions get the best of me for sure so I'm understanding that if I can control those I certainly have a better chance of playing well".

"I definitely hit it better off the tee". Everything was in good shape. We don't know much else to say because, based on how many times Chez was shown on TV, Fox seemed as surprised as anyone this happened.

Not only is there little cause for alarm, McIlroy has reason to be optimistic. Six of the world's top-10 players are headed home after missing the cut at the 117th U.S. Open.

The merchandise tent is essentially a giant department store, filled with just about anything you could ever want adorned with the Erin Hills logo. The equipment switch that was triggered by Nike's withdrawal from the market also inevitably adds an element of upheaval that McIlroy would ideally have done without.

He had a chat with swing coach Michael Bannon on Thursday night, and Bannon had observed that McIlroy's transition down from the top was simply too quick. "I think at this point in time I just need to play".

"I could not have hit that three-wood to the last (from 299 yards) any better if I tried, just a little high cut and I was very fortunate for the overnight rain for the ball to stay there. But at least I'll get to sit in air con (ditioning) and watch the guys tear it up on the weekend".

Here is another reason for McIlroy cheer; no other player among the world's leading group has recently embarked on a profitable run.

The disappointed 21-year-old declined to be interviewed.

Champ said a practice round with former British Open victor Louis Oosthuizen and four-times major victor McIlroy on Monday helped his confidence. Should success arrive within this period, the frustrations of the first part of 2017 will be readily forgotten.

He switched putters trying to find a new feel on the Erin Hills greens. It's just a matter of getting competitive rounds under my belt.

"I'm playing next week in CT". I think those two things and a lot of hard work, really.

Fowler said he knew low scores would be attainable but was impressed by the U.S. Open record-setting round of nine-under carded by Justin Thomas, his friend and room mate this week. When I was younger it went everywhere. Going into the final round, 42 players were still under par.

Day merely tore up the fescue Friday.

I actually walked right by that station on Thursday afternoon, and was indeed nearly run over by a cart driven by two young volunteers tasked with hauling the empty 5-gallon water jugs they'd obviously been using to replace the potentially-infested waters.

Jason Day, the world number three, also looks poised to get the weekend off after a 75 left the Australian at 10 over through two round.

"Today I felt really good, played really well, and I have to wake up with the same feelings tomorrow if I'm going to have a chance. And unfortunately, this didn't pan out".

The pilot of a blimp that crashed Thursday just east of the golf course reportedly remained in serious condition.
