Scalise is still in critical condition at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, but an update Thursday indicated that his condition had improved after a second surgery. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the hospital wrote, "on behalf of the Scalise family".

"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time", the hospital added.

Sava earlier said the Louisiana congressman had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood.

The surgeon on Friday said he was "a lot more confident and optimistic" about Scalise's recovery than he was two days ago.

Sava said he was surprised by initial media reports that said Scalise was in stable condition.

Doctors expect Mr Scalise will eventually be able to walk and return to work at "full capacity".

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP. At the end of the introductions for the Republican team, the stadium announcer also boomed the name Steve Scalise, leading to a standing ovation.
