Confederations Cup Report: Portugal 2 - 2 Mexico

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo looks down in the shadow during a training session at the Arena in Kazan Russia on Saturday

Hector Moreno's late header secured a 2-2 draw in Kazan on Saturday in the teams' opening Group A encounter at the Confederations Cup.

Ronaldo's superb volley looked to have helped Portugal take the lead, but the video assistant referee came to Mexico's rescue after Nani had put the ball in the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo fed Ricardo Quaresma through for the opener in Russian Federation, but Javier Hernandez equalised for Mexico before the break.

That's all that André Silva got in today's Confederation cup game game between Portugal and Mexico (2-2 FT).

Portugal take on tournament hosts Russian Federation in their next group-stage outing on Wednesday afternoon, before then facing outsiders New Zealand three days later.

Hector Moreno's stoppage time header for Mexico ensured the points were shared with Portugal.

Mexico's all-time leading scorer still had time before the end of the half to blaze over from a good position.

'We played the European champions on equal terms, we generated chances but couldn't finish them, ' said Osorio. Portugal had a first-half goal by Nani disallowed after a video review, when the game was still scoreless.

'We have to win, because if we win the next game we will be one step away from qualifying'.

Ronaldo is reckoned to favour an Old Trafford return should he leave Real, with former Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho also keen on a reunion.

A short statement to FIFA's in-house television reporters, lamenting that his team "suffered at the last minute" due to Hector Moreno's late equaliser, was the only material anybody had to go on, though Ronaldo later said there was no need for Portugal "to sound the alarm" in relation to the result.

And on the video referral system (Portugal had a goal ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee): "It's the new rule".

It seemed so unusual to take him off so early in the second half, so perhaps his own coach is still not fully convinced especially with all the firepower he has at his disposal. "But we have to be careful because I don't think people understand this new rule really well".

"It wasn't the result that we wanted", he said. Quaresma scores - Ronaldo bursts down the left after Salcedo fails to cut out a crossfield pass. Ronaldo loses the run of things as he brings the ball into the box, but turns out of trouble.

And the star man for Mexico was Jonathan dos Santos, who pulled the strings from the centre of the park for his side, while also pressing hard off the ball.
