Chris Ruddy Says He Did Not Speak With Trump About Firing Mueller

When Comey leaked memos of his conversations with the president, saying Trump had asked for his "loyalty", and hoping that he would ease off on the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed by the Justice Department as a special counsel to investigate Russia's involvement in the election and the possibility of the Trump campaign's ties to that interference.

"If you want to see the President on a fast track to impeachment, then he should take this advice and fire Mueller", said Illinois Representative Luis GutiƩrrez in a speech on the House floor Tuesday.

Apart from Rosenstein and Sessions, the only confirmed Justice official is Rachel Brand, the associate attorney general, whom the Senate approved on a party-line vote.

Trump told NBC's Lester Holt in an interview on May 11 days after Comey was sacked that he fired him because "this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story".

"If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller", the California lawmaker tweeted.

"I think the president is actually pretty confident that ultimately this is all going to come out in the wash and ultimately he's still going to be president".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in separate testimony Tuesday that there was no "secret plan" to fire Mueller, nor was there cause.

Jeannie Rhee, who previously served as a deputy assistant attorney general and now works as a partner in the investigations practice at WilmerHale, donated to the Democratic National Committee as well as campaign PACs Obama in 2008 and 2011, and Clinton's campaign in 2015 and 2016.

"I think Congress should now intervene and they should abolish the independent counsel, because Comey makes so clear that it's the poison fruit of a deliberate manipulation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation director leaking to The New York Times, deliberately set up this particular situation". Rosenstein wrote a memo to Sessions on Comey, which was then used by the administration to justify firing the director for his handling of the Hillary Clinton email case a year ago.

He emphasized that he thinks removing Mueller would be a mistake, but he described the special counsel's power and his appointment to the role as "illegitimate". Under the regulation, Special Counsel Mueller can be fired only for good cause, and I am required to put that cause in writing.

The new talk about dismissing Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies - including some close to White House strategist Steve Bannon - who are increasingly frustrated with the prospect of a long and winding probe.

They say Trump did not collude with Russian Federation and see the investigation as a politically motivated sham that handicaps Trump's ability to execute his agenda, according to one person who advises the White House on how to handle the probe.

"Look, the president of the United States, as we all know, is a unitary executive".

"I don't think Newt said that", Gingrich told reporters. "Ruddy never spoke to the president regarding this issue", Spicer said. "With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said via email, "Chris speaks for himself".

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the issues Gingrich and others have raised.
