Will Smith, Almodovar open a testy Cannes Film Festival

Netflix row stirs tough questions for cinema's future

New rule created to exclude Netflix Netflixs two movies Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories will remain in circulation at this years festival but the French movie theater owners have pushed through a new rule that effectively bans Netflix from participating in Cannes next year.

"Time to Go" by Grzegorz Mołda is among nine films running for the Palme d'Or for a short film. For me, the only solution is that the new platforms should respect and obey the existing rules that are already adopted and respected by the existing networks.

But Smith was among those not clapping and he disagreed with the Spanish director, revealing his kids are huge Netflix fans. Netflix brings a great connectivity.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious and formal events in the world, but this year the festival is getting a breath of fresh air thanks to one special jury member, box office maverick Will Smith.

This year, she will premiere "The Beguiled", her fourth at Cannes and second in competition.

Entirely coincidentally of course, Smith, a judge on the Cannes Film Festival panel, is starring in a film to be released on Netflix later this year.

This year marks the 70th birthday of the world's biggest film festival, with A-listers including Nicole Kidman, Clint Eastwood and Will Smith set to grace the glitzy French resort amid "unprecedented" tight security.

This year's program also points to changes shaking up the film industry, including the march on Hollywood by streaming giants Netflix and Amazon and the arrival of virtual reality.

Director Pedro Almodovar, Jury President of the 70th Cannes Film Festival and Jury members Agnes Jaoui and Will Smith pose. He said he wanted everybody to witness a movie for the first time in a theater.

He added: "In my home, Netflix has had absolutely no effect on what they go to the movie theater to watch, go to the cinema to be humbled by certain images and stay home for others - no cross".

Fremaux said the Netflix titles were short-listed for their artistic merit, "directed by two directors who are real movie guys": South Korean Bong Joon Ho and American Noah Baumbach. In my house Netflix has been nothing but an absolute benefit because they get to watch films that they never would have seen.

The ruling could mean trouble for Netflix and similar online distributors, which normally don't show their movies in theatres (Netflix did a limited release for Beasts of No Nation to qualify if for some United States awards, and Amazon's Manchester by the Sea did well at the Oscars, partially thanks to its theatrical release).

Pedro Almodovar, president of the festival jury, has taken a break from posing for the photographers and made a decision to take a spot amongst them, being handed a camera and shot his way- until an official asked him to get back to his original duty. "In my home it has done nothing but broaden my children's cinematic global comprehension".
