Steelers give offense a jolt in youth-heavy draft

The Steelers made linebacker T.J. Watt a first-round pick on Thursday night and that means Christmas will be a family reunion for some members of the Watt family.

T.J. Watt: the first overall pick for the SteelersT.J. Middle brother, Derek, 24, is a fullback for the Los Angeles Chargers. God, that sounds awesome. Here is how each scenario could play out for the Steelers.

Watt said: "Everybody knows me as J.J. Watt's younger brother, but people don't know the little things that I do, the work ethic, the countless hours of film, getting the right amount of sleep, treating myself like a professional athlete while I was still in college". His size is complemented by production.

"I was a first or second team All-American after 18 months of playing defense", he said.

If T.J. Watt can rustle up just one-third (4), of his college sack total for the Steelers in 2017, it will have justified him being chosen No. 1. Conner is a very good football player who shared their facility. Someone call Woody Harrelson, white men can jump! Watt came as a surprise at pick number 30 because of his lack of experience, starting only one year for the Badgers. However, due to a 2015 injury, Watt didn't see the field on the defensive side of the ball until this past season.

Bottom Line: Watt has the physical traits and intangibles necessary to grow into a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker. T.J. caps his rookie year in this year's AFC title game by sacking Tom Brady five times, once hitting him so hard that a foggy Brady admits in the postgame press conference that he has cheated during every game of his career.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in late February, Watt tested very well in front of team personnel. Again, only one of these picks addressed an immediate need for the Steelers but when looking at the bigger picture, these picks make more sense. That's too much. Conner is a downhill bruiser at 6 foot 2 and 240 pounds, but has better hands than advertised. He started as a tight end before switching to linebacker.

The Steelers picked up quarterback Joshua Dobbs (No. 135) from Tennessee, defensive back Brian Allen (No. 173) from Utah, long snapper Colin Holba (No. 213) from Louisville and linebacker Keion Adams (No. 248) from Western Michigan. The answer to that question will undoubtedly reflect the team's level of confidence in Vince Williams moving forward.

One thing Conner spoke of that he wanted to do in his last season was catch more passes. He was a three-star prospect and the just the 49th best player in the state of Georgia when he signed with the Vols out of Jonesboro High School.
