'Star Wars' influences top baby names; Caitlyn plunges in popularity

Choosing baby name for a boy or a girl can be a daunting endeavor for parents

Pennsylvania's top two picks, Emma and Noah, were the same as the nation's most popular names. In Louisiana, Liam was the name most frequently bestowed on boys, with 276 little Liams.

The most popular boy name selected in Arkansas previous year was Elijah.

The top five most popular baby boy names on the national list are Noah, Liam, William, Mason and James.

Outside the top 10, pop culture once again influenced baby name decisions, according to Forbes. The top 10 names are listed above in the slideshow. In 1990, Michael and Jessica took the lead.

Here's a full breakdown of the names, which comes from Social Security card applications.

This year's winners for biggest jump in popularity in the Top 1,000 are Kehlani and Kylo. The administration attributed this hike to singer Kehlani Parrish who was nominated for a Grammy a year ago.

Kehlani rose 2,487 spots on the girls' side to number 872, from number 3,359 in 2015.

The force was strong for Kylo in 2016 as he soared 2,368 spots for the boys, from number 3,269 in 2015 to number 901. Music fans will recognize Kehlani from artist Kehlani Parrish, and Star Wars fans will remember Kylo from "The Force Awakens".

The name Adonis is also the number four fastest riser on the list for boys.
