Morgan said he couldn't think of a better recipient than Watson, who he called a "flag bearer for all things gender neutral".

Emma Watson had high praise for MTV's move to remove gender qualifiers for its Movie and TV Awards. This decision made the 2017 MTV Music and TV Awards the first major award show to forego gender distinctions such as "best actor" or "best actress".

Despite glowering skies and dime-size hail stones, MTV is heralding the start of the summer viewing season with its Movie & TV Awards.

For the past 24 years, the MTV Movie Awards has been an evening dedicated to having fun with the film industry-rarely taking itself seriously as an award show.

Beauty and the Beast was the Movie of the Year, with its star, Emma Watson, receiving the Best Actor in a Movie award.

"Tom me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes", she said.

Adam Devine hosted the proceedings and, tongue-in-cheek, described himself as a progressive personality before declaring, "I love Hugh Jackman".

That last award was presented by actress Allison Williams and a nervous-looking Lil Rey Howery, co-stars of the race-themed horror film Get Out.

"Thank you for advocating me, in such an inclusive, patient and loving way", she thanked the audience accompanied by thunderous applause.

The MTV Generation Award went to the "Fast and Furious" action franchise and star Vin Diesel thanked "a generation that was willing to accept this multicultural franchise where it didn't matter what color your skin was or what country you're from - when you're family, you're family".

". when I saw the breakdown for the character, it said 'female, nonbinary.' And I thought, 'Interesting, I think I know about those words, but let me do research into every aspect of this character and their world and who they are.' And so, female meaning sex and non-binary meaning a gender identity that is an umbrella term for people who identify as neither man nor a woman".
