Iglesias, Kinsler lead Tigers to 6-3 win over Astros

Peacock Astros 1-hit Tigers to 1-0 win

The Tigers take on the Astros again tonight.

Houston got five hits combined in the second through fifth innings, but wasn't able to string enough together to put Fulmer in a bind. Mikie Mahtook's two-run homer in the seventh inning provided the Detroit offense.

Gomes' RBI double and Jason Kipnis' run-scoring single built a 2-0 lead in the second. Nicholas Castellanos leads the Tigers with 38 hits and 25 RBI while Victor Martinez and Ian Kinsler have combined for 75 hits and 35 RBI.

Brad Peacock, making a spot start for the injured Dallas Keuchel, was outstanding, allowing no runs and one hit in 4.1 innings, striking out 8 of the 16 batters he faced.

In their three-game losing streak, the Tigers had scored four runs.

"Little bad luck, little bit of a rough start to the inning and they found a way to push across a couple of runs", said Astros manager A.J. Hinch. Gose, who last pitched in high school, logged 372 games in five seasons as a center fielder with Detroit and Toronto before initiating the position change this spring. Iglesias singled to start the frame, advanced to third on a double by Kinsler and scored on a wild pitch. "As a team, we needed it. I was looking for a fastball to do damage, and I got it". Norris exited the game after retiring one batter in the seventh, and Shane Greene quickly dispatched Jake Marisnick and Springer to end the inning.

Evan Gattis, and Norichika Aoki hit sacrifice flies in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to tie it at 2-2.

"I think we had a few chances on him early", Astros third baseman Alex Bregman said of Norris. "It's more in-game and some of the things that we can do knowing that the bottom of the order can be productive".

Starter Lance McCullers earned the win on 96 pitches in just five innings, although he allowed just one hit and no runs.

"It just feels good not to have any discomfort", he said. "I was trying to throw strikes, being very conscious of not walking them".

Fiers is 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA over four career outings against the Tigers, last starting against Detroit on July 30, 2016 when he allowed one unearned run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 3-2 loss at Comerica Park.

Houston now sits atop the American League west with their 31-15 record, (and the entire MLB for that matter) and they now lead their division by seven games. Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred, Joe Torre and many of Watson's former teammates honored him in a pre-game ceremony which also featured a video tribute with messages from Yankees manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman.

Astros: SS Carlos Correa was out of the lineup for a second straight game because he wasn't feeling well. "We'll assess all of our options", Hinch said Tuesday.
