How Minnesota's delegation to Congress responded to special counsel for Russian Federation probe

He then followed it up with "With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!"

Trump wrote, referring to former President Barack Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. While Trump himself derided the news, complaining that there was no need for a "special councel" for him if there was none for Obama, many others celebrated this development.

The tumult in Washington deepened on Tuesday over allegations Trump had sought to end the FBI's investigation into ties between Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and Russian Federation.

Thursday was not the first time Mr Trump has made baseless claims without providing any evidence.

According to The Times, top White House staffers were particularly anxious over news that Comey had kept detailed notes and memos regarding several meetings with Trump during which Trump asked the former agency chief to shut down an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

His angry statement in early-morning Twitter posts came barely 12 hours after a more measured response to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel.

President Donald Trump lashed out Thursday at the appointment of a special counsel to investigate allegations his campaign collaborated with Russian Federation as Congress confronted an apparent setback in its own probes: A lawyer for Michael Flynn said the fired national security adviser would not provide documents for an intelligence panel's inquiry.

Top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi said an independent commission to investigate the Russian Federation matter was still needed to guard against White House interference.

Republicans have largely stood behind Trump in the first months of his presidency as the FBI and congressional investigations into Russia's election meddling intensified.

If past is prologue, Mueller's investigation will be a huge distraction for the White House as everybody "lawyers up" and attention shifts from what remains of Trump's agenda to the latest twists and turns that can be discerned. "And now that the Justice Department has rightly turned the reins of the investigation over to an independent special prosecutor, it is critical that former Director Mueller is given the resources he needs to get to the bottom of Russia's attack on our democracy, without any interference from the Trump administration".

When Mueller took over the army of 35,000 employees working out of 400 offices around the world, nobody ever expected that the country would have the possible impeachment of a president dominating its collective conscience again. House Democrats demanded an investigation into Trump immediately after the memo was released. This despite the Justice Department knowing the FBI probe was not only an official investigation but a criminal investigation.

Mr Trump is not being impeached at the moment. The White House denied Comey's account of his conversation with Trump about Flynn. His appointment has been welcomed by politicians from both sides.

If the contemporaneous notes from Comey are authentic - and he is the kind of bureaucrat who probably documents the ties he wears each day - it isn't hard to conclude that Trump sought to obstruct justice by asking the director to kill the Flynn probe with, "I hope you can let this go".
