The lower part of the town was evacuated Monday amid worries a nearby levee wouldn't hold. Northbound I-55 is expected to close before the afternoon rush hour on Wednesday.

The Meramec River crested early Thursday morning and MoDOT crews began opening lanes as the water receded.

"With the rainfall we're having here, it's going to prolong the recession of the waters - the Meramec, the MS and the Missouri" said Kelly. The levees are in rural areas and the impact is mostly on farmland.

Many parts of the Midwest saw rainfall of 3 inches (8 cm) to 4 inches (10 cm) on Thursday while Charleston in eastern IL received 6 inches (15 cm), said Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the federal Weather Prediction Center.

The flooding spotlight is on St. Louis, where water levels on the Meramec River are expected to crest today.

The Black River rose to a record 28.95 feet before spilling over levees, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Gary Woodall.

Jansen says the biggest concern is over floodwater headed toward communities in Lawrence County.

Heavy rain over the weekend caused the MS and smaller rivers to swell. Waters along the White River may not drop below flood stage until the third or fourth week in May.

"The Kansas City metropolitan area has lots of creeks and small streams and those are always subject to flash flooding". That would cut off thousands of workers from getting to work and school.

In St Louis, authorities say up to 200 homes along the Meramac river have been damaged, and many more stand in harm's way.

Heavy rain last weekend resulted in a sudden rise in rivers in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.

Parts of Pocahontas, Ark., one of the hardest hit areas of the state was put under a mandatory evacuation order.

US 63 south of Vienna in Maries County, north of Rolla, is back open to traffic after being closed due to flooding since Sunday. Wild animals displaced by flooding also pose a potential threat. The flood fight also continued near St. Louis, where sunny skies belied an ominous forecast: More rain that could send the bulging Meramec River to record heights and potentially into hundreds of homes.

River levels are dropping along the Black River in Missouri and Arkansas, and the Meramec River in suburban St. Louis. But the mess left behind is substantial after the river reached record levels in both places.

Areas farther south along the Mississippi River in Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana may not experience a crest until the third week in May.
