So the idea that the Trump administration would acknowledge host a Cinco de Mayo celebration - which, as Politico noted, has been used by past presidents as an opportunity to celebrate ties with Mexico - was bound to be an awkward one.

Cinco de Mayo is around the corner, and restaurants offering everything from Mexican food to pizza are using the holiday to offer deals and promotions. The weather Friday will be a delight for any outdoor Cinco De Mayo activities and celebrations from parties at home to downtown festivals, patio celebrations at most Mexican restaurants or parties sponsored by civic and art groups. It's less likely that you know what the holiday actually stands for, but you probably do know this: Many Latinx people, and especially Mexican-Americans, would prefer that you don't celebrate the holiday the way you might be used to. It's an American holiday, created by Latinos in California during the Civil War, according to UCLA professor David Hayes-Bautista.

I've seen people at restaurants on Cinco de Mayo thinking that they are celebrating Mexican Independence Day while others suck down margaritas and yell, "Happy Cinco de Drinko".

The Newport Beach and Laguna Beach police departments will deploy additional officers Friday and Saturday in an effort to stem drunk driving over Cinco de Mayo weekend. The party will offer guests unlimited "gringo" (crispy-shell) beef tacos, meatballs, honey chipotle wings and chips and salsa.

Strictly speaking, it is still important to Mexico's independence.

"I think we started a few years after we were married, so 1979 was when we began our Cinco de Mayo tradition", Tia Laura told me recently. Saturday's festivities, set for noon to midnight, also include food and drink specials and live music from the Doug Brundies Big Acoustic Act, Juliana and a Fuller objective and Wicked Liz & The Bellyswirls.

Thirsty's Thirsty's doesn't have all its specials set, but patrons can expect discounts on Cinco de Mayo favorites like margaritas, tequila and Mexican beers. Philadelphia's Steal Your Face band is visiting as part of its 420 Earth Day Tour starting at 8 p.m. Old Town will transform the into the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration north of the border. Customers can also purchase $6 ultimate margaritas. Belly up to the buffet from 6 p.m. til close for $12 per person. "You don't need one the other 364 days of the year".
