So the idea that the Trump administration would acknowledge host a Cinco de Mayo celebration - which, as Politico noted, has been used by past presidents as an opportunity to celebrate ties with Mexico - was bound to be an awkward one.

Cinco de Mayo is around the corner, and restaurants offering everything from Mexican food to pizza are using the holiday to offer deals and promotions. The weather Friday will be a delight for any outdoor Cinco De Mayo activities and celebrations from parties at home to downtown festivals, patio celebrations at most Mexican restaurants or parties sponsored by civic and art groups. It's less likely that you know what the holiday actually stands for, but you probably do know this: Many Latinx people, and especially Mexican-Americans, would prefer that you don't celebrate the holiday the way you might be used to. It's an American holiday, created by Latinos in California during the Civil War, according to UCLA professor David Hayes-Bautista.

I've seen people at restaurants on Cinco de Mayo thinking that they are celebrating Mexican Independence Day while others suck down margaritas and yell, "Happy Cinco de Drinko".
