Trump's pick Gorsuch sworn in, restoring top court's conservative tilt

Political observers suggest that the appointment of Gorsuch as Supreme Court justice is now a part of Trump's legacy and a big win as president of the United States.

Gorsuch's swearing in comes after a fierce confirmation battle, waged largely along party lines, that deeply divided the Senate.

"I've always heard the most important thing a president of the United States does is appoint people, hopefully great people like this appointment, to the United States Supreme Court, and I can say this is a great honor", Trump said beforehand.

Trump made a point of thanking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for his role in winning confirmation.

Gorsuch is also a self-professed admirer of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, the author of the Supreme Court's landmark 2008 Second Amendment decision, which found the Constitution protects an individual's right to possess firearms without regard to any militia membership.

WASHINGTON | Surrounded by family and his soon-to-be Supreme Court colleagues, Neil Gorsuch took the first of two oaths on Monday as he prepared to take his seat on the court and restore its conservative majority. In several key cases, where the justices had been deadlocked 4-4, the court may order a rehearing to allow Gorsuch to participate as the tie-breaking vote.

This particular oath, Kennedy said in brief remarks, also dates to 1789 and "reminds us that we as a people are bound together".

Gorsuch promised to be a "faithful servant of the Constitution and laws of this great nation". President Trump, who nominated Gorsuch on January 31, introduced Gorsuch to a supportive crowd in the Rose Garden. All three Senators may have very strong Republican opponents and they certainly don't want to be explaining to voters why they voted against Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court.

"I can not tell you how honored I am to have here today my mentor, Justice Kennedy, administer the judicial oath, a lovely oath, as he did for me 11 years ago when I became a Circuit judge", Gorsuch said, adding that he was "humbled" by the role.

On Monday morning, Chief Justice John Roberts administered Mr Gorsuch's first oath, which all federal employees take, at a private ceremony at the Supreme Court. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.I want to thank the President for nominating me and for the great confidence and trust he's reposed in me. Under McConnell's leadership, the Senate past year refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Scalia.

Republican lawmakers refused to consider Barack Obama's nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative, who died in February past year.

The White House swearing-in ceremony is a departure from recent history. Republicans refused even to give Garland a hearing, taking their chances on the November election, and Trump's upset victory over Hillary Clinton kept the seat in conservatives' hands. Not only did he keep his Supreme Court justice promise, but his cabinet picks have been awesome.

She said the scut work had a way of humbling her.
