Trump ally Manafort will register as foreign agent, spokesman says

Reportedly, Manafort recently received "formal guidance" from the U.S. Justice Department advising that he register, retroactively, as a foreign agent for lobbying work done in Ukraine. "The work in question was widely known, concluded before Mr. Manafort began working with the Trump Campaign and was not conducted on behalf of the Russian government".

Manafort, a longtime Republican political operative, led the presidential campaign from March until August past year when Trump asked him to resign.

Paul Manafort, a former chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, indicated Wednesday that, on the advice of us authorities, that he would register as a foreign agent "for some of his past political work", presumably in Ukraine. Manafort's work for the old Ukrainian government is coming back to haunt him as documents keep emerging to allegedly show how and how much Yanukovych paid him. Following the exit, the company received $13 million in loans from two businesses with major ties to Trump, a bombshell report by The New York Times reveals.

President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort had a big day Wednesday. Manafort never disclosed his association to the lobbying campaign to the Justice Department but said he's now "taking appropriate steps" to remedy that, his spokesperson Jason Maloni told Politico.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act requires people working on behalf of foreign political leaders to disclose their efforts to the Justice Department.

Ukrainian investigators called it evidence of "off-the-book" payments from a pro-Russian political party, but Manafort, who was an global consultant for the party, questioned the authenticity of the ledger. The other firm, Mercury LLC, said it also will register soon, after the fact. From 2012 until 2014, both firms represented a Ukrainian non-profit that aimed to improve ties between the United States and Ukraine.

"We have, and will continue to have, no hesitation doing so to underscore our commitment to transparency", Fritts said. Yanukovych was also Manafort's main client, and some Ukrainian officials think the payments indicate evidence of a corruption scandal between Yanukovych's party and various clients of Manafort's firm.

Foreign agent registration means, in essence, that you are an official lobbyist for a foreign government - there are well over 1,000 registered foreign agents in Washington.

The explanation: Although Manafort had previously disputed the authenticity of the ledger, he said in a statement to AP that "any wire transactions received by my company are legitimate payments for political consulting work that was provided".

Additionally, The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had sought and obtained a warrant from a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to monitor Carter Page, another former Trump campaign adviser, to investigate whether he was acting as a foreign intelligence asset of the Russian government.
