So with the death of Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, it's not an exaggeration to say a king has passed away.

Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney has died at the age of 84. No further details were immediately available.

The NFL world was hit with awful news on Thursday as Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney passed away at the age of 84.

Rooney is credited with one of the most influential rules in the National Football League, the "Rooney Rule".

The Panthers are going to be wearing a helmet with one half that has the Pitt logo and the other half that has the Steelers logo for their spring game on Saturday.

In 2000, Rooney was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, joining his father. The Steelers announced Mr. Rooney died Thursday, Apr. 13, 2017.

"Rooney is a true patriot", said Jacob Bartolomucci. He mingled with fans, much as his father did before him, and made his players feel supremely comfortable in his presence.

Rooney was named the 33rd Ambassador to Ireland in 2009 by President Barack Obama and served in that capacity until 2012.

"Personally, I'll always be grateful for the guidance and friendship he provided to me over the years".

State flags will remain at half-staff through Rooney's interment, the governor's announcement said. "I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Patricia, their children, and all of the Rooney family that God grant Dan eternal rest".

Rooney also led the charge of identifying minority head-coaching candidates while leading the league's diversity meeting.
