Wrigley Field's bricks complete the background.

After a chilly rain delayed proceedings for nearly two hours, the Cubs raised their 2016 World Series championship banner in a ceremony before their first home game of the young season. Rizzo wore a smile as big as the bleachers as fans roared and music boomed.

At the bottom of the outer band, the team's motto "We never quit" is written, and the inside of the band includes the local date and time the championship was won: "11-3-16, 12:47 am", as well as the scores and logos of the teams the Cubs beat during the playoffs.

The ring ceremony (a full article on the ceremony and the rings will post at 10 a.m. CT) delayed the start of the game by about 10 minutes and then John Lackey's first-inning pitching dragged things out even longer. He had another championship to chase. It is literally something no current Cubs fan has ever seen.

They included Jimmy Thurman, a 90-year-old World War II veteran from Kewanee, Illinois.

"My mindset's just to go get it", he said.

The weather change and rain delay made for a frigid evening on a windy night that foreshadowed what would be a low-scoring affair. Ross was competing in ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" on Monday. On Monday, Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts said the design was a collaborative effort. The other side features the year 2016 above the iconic Wrigley Field faade and Marquee, displaying the message "CUBS WIN!" Julianna Zobrist, wife of World Series MVP Ben Zobrist, belted a rendition of "God Bless America".

It will be another night to remember for fans and players as they continue to relish in the memories of the 2016 World Series win. Albert Almora Jr. sent a routine ground ball to shortstop, but Adrian Gonzalez dropped the throw from Seager.

Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery empathized with the fans' reaction.

Today would be a great day for the Cubs to get back on track as they they finish their series against the Dodgers, a team that happens to be one of the favorites in the National League to knock the Cubs out this season.

As video highlights played, Cubs players walked across the outfield and disappeared through a gate in right-center field. The respected first baseman was picked to begin hoisting the 2016 flag, and then he was the player who carried the World Series trophy onto the field.

You didn't think repeating as World Series champions was going to be easy, did you? Cubs Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins, Ryne Sandberg and Billy Williams got theirs.

Asked about Cotton, Royals manager Ned Yost said simply: "He was dynamite". It was for generations of believers who filled seats during good times and bad. Maddon said Rondon will likely be ready Saturday.

After the pregame ceremonies were over, it was Rizzo who delivered the big hit, collecting a walk-off single in the ninth to beat the Dodgers 3-2 in the early morning hours of Tuesday. But that all changed when the Cubs beat the Indians in a thrilling Game 7 at Cleveland last fall for their first championship since 1908. His specialty may be the power of his swing.

"He'll know something from the past, but I'm certain that it's more pertinent to go with what's being told to him based on actual information", Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "But there's just something different about this place".

The Cubs are loaded with talent again this season. The young pitcher, an instrumental part of back-to-back World Series trips, was killed in an offseason auto crash in the Dominican Republic.
