Rafael Benitez says Newcastle United "not mentally ready" at Ipswich Town

Championship: Newcastle star keeps sights on title

The Magpies are now eight points ahead of third placed Huddersfield Town, although the Terriers have a game in hand, but with David Wagner's side playing later at 5 o'clock, the Newcastle number one says they can take advantage by winning against Ipswich Town earlier in the day.

Rafael Benitez's side have won just twice in the last eight to slip seven points adrift of leaders Brighton.

Daryl Murphy looked to have rescued a point for the visitors after Freddie Sears handed Ipswich a deserved lead in the first half.

Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow says the squad are keen to secure promotion back to the Premier League as soon as possible.

However, Sears set up McGoldrick up for the Tractor Boys' second with 20 minutes remaining before Huws made it 3-1 in the 93rd minute.

But Newcastle fans on Twitter believe Benitez axed the wrong player, with Grant Hanley recalled in place of Chancel Mbemba.

Only three matches left for Newcastle and on this display it is hard to have any real confidence in NUFC gathering many more points, with more a reliance on the failings of others at the moment to give the Magpies a leg-up into the Premier League.

"I think our performance was a great tribute to Sir Bobby Robson and I think the game was a fitting tribute to him".

"I am concerned about the change in my team's performance from Leeds on Friday to the performance today".

If the Terriers win their two games in hand (against Derby County and Wolves), they will narrow the gap to just two points going into the final three matches of the season.

Newcastle still boast the best away record in the Championship, having taken a staggering 43 points on their travels from only 21 games played, but in recent weeks their form has dipped, and a loss against Sheffield Wednesday last time out at Hillsborough will have been tough to take.
