A member of one of the NFL's founding families has died.

Gov. Tom Wolf has ordered the commonwealth flag to fly at half-staff throughout Pennsylvania to honor Dan Rooney, long-time owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and former United States ambassador to Ireland. "He's an example for all of us in how he lived his life and how he ran a sports team, which I think is one of the most successful sports teams in the history of sports". The Pittsburgh Penguins and Pitt's football team have found their ways to pay respects to the Pro Football Hall of Famer. The Steelers announced Mr. Rooney died Thursday, Apr. 13, 2017. Game 2 will also take place Friday night in Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Area. "Dan Rooney and his family, like the Maras, provided the foundation for the National Football League that we all see today", Giants chairman and executive vie president Steve Tisch said in a separate statement. He was classy, courteous, dedicated, honest, hard-working - and, most of all, he never forgot where he came from. I have known Dan for more than 50 years from the time I was a priest in Pittsburgh.

Rooney is survived by his wife Patricia and seven of their nine children. Mr. Rooney was a champion and a true Pittsburgh icon.
