Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney passes away at age 84

The NFL world lost a big one here.

The loss of Rooney is felt throughout the Pittsburgh community, including the Steelers' best players, such as wide receiver Antonio Brown. "He's an example for all of us in how he lived his life and how he ran a sports team, which I think is one of the most successful sports teams in the history of sports".

In 2000, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and two years later, turned day-to-day control of the Steelers over to his son, Art Rooney II. The emblem features the Steelers logo with "Dan Rooney 1932-2017" around it.

There was a moment of silence for Rooney before the game, and a tribute video shown on the Jumbotron that ended with, "Thank you for the memories, Mr. Rooney".

Penguins president/CEO David Morehouse and team owner Mario Lemieux both issued statements on Rooney's passing on Thursday.

"It was with deep sadness that I learned this evening of the death of Ambassador Daniel ("Dan") Rooney". On behalf of the entire Spanos family and everyone at the Chargers, our sincerest condolences to his wife Patricia and the entire Rooney family. Dan was a personal friend of mine and the proudest Irish supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Rooney was a great man and true leader who always put others before himself. "He will be missed".
