Pennsylvania lowering flags for late Steelers chairman Dan Rooney

Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney

Over the years, Dan Rooney held a number of front office jobs. Rooney's dad, Art, founded the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Dan grew up around the team and its players.

One of the most influential and beloved owners, Rooney died Thursday. "Dan Rooney and his family, like the Maras, provided the foundation for the National Football League that we all see today", Giants chairman and executive vie president Steve Tisch said in a separate statement. His immeasurable impact on the NFL will forever be recognized and his legacy, which includes the Rooney Rule, will continue to guide our league. His work with the Irish-American charities was noticed by the former president and in 2009, Rooney became the American ambassador to Ireland until his resignation in 2012. The Steelers aren't alone in their remembrance of Rooney, who later became USA ambassador to Ireland under Barack Obama. In 2003 he helped establish the Rooney Rule. The NFL world lost a big one here. "Our hearts and prayers are with the Rooney family and Steelers organization".

Pittsburgh football will honor Dan Rooney at their spring game on Saturday.

"Family, faith, football - those are my priorities", Rooney wrote in a 2007 memoir. Mr Rooney also prepared the way for the Obama visit to Ireland.

TOM GOLDMAN, BYLINE: Dan Rooney was the rare man of power and influence who never forgot to be kind as well. "His knack for resolving conflict, championing diversity and pursuing excellence with integrity earned him not only Super Bowl rings, but our collective admiration and affection".
