It was a humiliating blow to one of the biggest USA media names, a veteran broadcaster at Fox News for two decades who counted President Donald Trump among his personal supporters and whose ratings soared in defiance of his alleged abusive behavior towards women.

"Over the years, I have talked one or two times about Fox News host, and bold fresh piece of humanity, Bill O'Reilly", Colbert said.

Late Tuesday, O'Reilly also found a fan and a black, female defender in Deneen Borelli, a Fox News contributor who has appeared on his program about a dozen times, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Murdochs also had more than just O'Reilly's TV career to consider: The O'Reilly controversy has been casting a shadow over 21st Century's $14 billion bid to win the British government's approval to buy Sky TV, the British satellite service.

There was no immediate response from Bill O'Reilly's bosses Wednesday to escalating reports that the Fox News Channel personality will lose his job following accusations he had harassed women. We have full confidence that the network will continue to be a powerhouse in cable news.

And he keeps echoing in the broader media landscape.

It is not known what words were exchanged between O'Reilly and Francis.

The end for O'Reilly was set in motion by a scathing New York Times investigation in early April that revealed that he and Fox had settled five allegations of harassment brought by Fox employees over a 15-year period.

We don't think anyone is denying the success of The O'Reilly Factor as a program - say what you will about the network or its political viewpoint, but ratings are ratings.

Last summer, 21st Century Fox CEO Roger Ailes resigned in the wake of his own sexual misconduct scandal.

"I've always asked, 'How many women have to come forward for one woman to be believed, ' but I guess there's no substitute for a loss in advertising dollars", says attorney Gloria Allred, whose practice specializes in sexual harassment cases.

With a profit centre gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell nearly 1% on Wednesday in heavy trading.

Responding to the news of his departure, O'Reilly said: 'It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims.

Vanity Fair notes that some people in the Fox News newsroom cried over O'Reilly's departure, while other folks were overjoyed, which seemed to mirror the reaction Twitter.

Fox said that Tucker Carlson's show would move to 8 p.m.to replace O'Reilly and that the panel talk show "The Five" would take Carlson's time slot at 9 p.m.

O'Reilly had ruled the "no spin zone" on television with a quick smile and an even quicker temper.

O'Reilly is on a vacation that on Wednesday took him to Francis' general audience in St. Peter's Square.

Don't expect O'Reilly to slip quietly away, said Annenberg's Hollihan. And I said, well if you mean he's a neanderthal, then we're on the same page.

"But that is the unfortunate reality many of us in the public eye must live with today", said the O'Reilly Factor host.

O'Reilly's "Killing" series books have consistently sold 1 million or more copies in hardcover, a rare achievement in publishing.

'The Pope. I would very much like to speak with him.

Normally a network losing a top star like O'Reilly would provide an opening to competitors, but Fox News is so far ahead of MSNBC and CNN that even with the inevitable ratings drop, they will remain the top-rated cable news network for the foreseeable future.

"All he ever did was have your back", Colbert's alternative persona said in defence of O'Reilly.

He also gave a special blessing to English-speaking pilgrims, saying: 'I invoke upon you and your families the loving mercy of God our Father'. You didn't deserve this great man.
