Joss Whedon doesn't want A-lister for Batgirl

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel CEO Kevin Feige says that Joss Whedon - former Avengers director and recently announced writer/director of a brand-new Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. - called him prior to taking the gig, presumably to get his blessing. That's something Joss Whedon made clear when asked about casting Batgirl. But in a case of "not denying" the fact, Whedon spoke excitedly with Variety on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 red carpet about his plans for the Batgirl film. And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight, so its not as critical. Stars like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo help make up the Marvel Universe, where as DC has gone with actors like Ben Affleck, Will Smith and Gal Gadot for its movies.

After spending years working for Marvel Studios, Joss Whedon went to the competition.

Go ahead and laugh, but remember that Batgirl is part of the Bat-Family. But you need somebody who's going to be just right.

"I think James in particular has an incredible connection with these characters and with this cosmic world".

It certainly sounds like Joss Whedon has already started on the project and is preparing to find the flawless Batgirl. For now, it's extremely exciting just to know that Whedon is 100% directing the project and ensuring that he brings the ideal performance to the big screen. Though Whedon's lighthearted style is suited toward teen girl characters (see: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, his Kitty Pryde-focused run on Astonishing X-Men), it would be refreshing to see a Batgirl who is well into adulthood - self-assured and confident.
